I arrived at Cleveland Hopkins airport at what my phone first thought was 8:38 but quickly flicker'd to 11:38. I felt like I was time traveling. It was a long day started at 4 am in Eugene, then a little wait in Portland (with free wireless!) then a longer layover in Vegas (with free wireless again!). So I got in late and was met by my mom who brought some god food and a warm car. IT's been good so far, I look forward to seeing friends and family.

In the early, early morning at 5am i begin my first journey back to the midwest after being gone for almost 6 months. This is surely my longest stretch without going home. It's been rough, it's been sad and it's been good. All in all, it's a growing experience. Still hard to tell whether I fel bad about it or if I feel I've made some progress. That part probably comes when you walk through your mom's door again. I can safely say that all the bullshit (for lack of a better term) that has always surrounded going back home for holidays has been lifted. I am not dreading it, I look forward to it. There's been a filtering of what's important and what's not. There are so many people that I want to spend time with. I can't wait.

i've always kind of considered every day to be a near death experience. i mean, not to 1. think i'm some philosopher or 2. be overly morose but really every day we are fighting gravity just to stand up, so the fact that we can manage through a day without a meteor hitting us or something should be considered amazing. i think that it is good to stop and realize these things occasionally. it's easy to get caught up in complaining and consuming and everything else that comes along with being a modern human being. we don't get chased by animals or come close to hypothermia on a regular basis like our ancestors. so i am thankful that i got some perspective smacked into me when i hit the front of a honda accord last night and then the wet pavement of franklin boulevard. i spent an entire year riding like an idiot in a way more populated city. for some reason this didn't happen to me until i came out here. a new place. all alone. a place where i've been trying to gain perspective and that event really made that perspective hit home (parden the pun).i'm glad i was wearing a helmet.

the anniversary of my going vegan passed about 2 weeks ago and i have to say, i'm a little surprised. mostly at the fact that i did it and at how easy it was to do. being raised vegetarian i'd had "rested on my laurels" about going all the way and becoming vegan. i have to say, it's pretty great. i feel like my habits all around concerning eating have improved. i spend more time contemplating what i eat and making sure that what i purchase is really worth it. with the recent green movement i also feel really trendy, which is always great. anyways, i kinda just wanted to "toot my own horn" a bit. i really like being vegan and hope that i'll keep it going.

so i've been in oregon for about, how many weeks now, 3 or something? it's felt like an eternity, mostly since the pace that i am moving at is now glacial. i begged for nature. got it. i begged for less people. got it. now i wish i had the opposite. i was playing tennis on the lovely grounds of the university of oregon the other day with david (seasoned pro) and jessica (my deuce mate) and overheard a conversation by some dudes who decided to also play some tenni. they were mostly talking about "fixies" and "covnerting english racers" to said fixies in doo rags but they also talked about moving. apparently one of them was moving to, shocking, chicago. he talked about all the places he and his i guess partner had moved in the past few years. this was a sudden move or something. the thing that struck me was that he said to the doo ragged man, "the nice thing is, we haven't ever really missed any place after we've left it". that's amazing! i haven't lived in a lot of places. just ohio, indiana, chicago and now oregon. for the first time though, i do miss something. i know what it is, it's a combination of a lot of things. family, space, time, speed, love. anyways i guess my point is just that i'm alone now and in being alone, i've realized what i've had over the past year. and it was awesome. i am the warrior. heart to heart you'll win.

so i was home for awhile. most of my time was spent with my family. i didn't really drive much and it was either hot as shit or raining in akron, ohio. i did feel a very distinct separation from my family this last time. not a negative one, just that i was becoming more of my own person, not so reliant on their "support". it feels better, feels like i can do more now on my own.

So these are 2 excerpts from photostrips that I dug up the other day. Well the one on the right is new, so I only dug up the other one. Anyways they got me thinking about all kinds of things like change, time, age and photobooths in general which then got me thinking about photographs. Recently I decided to bust out my SX-70 Land Polaroid camera on Memorial Day. There was only about 5 exposures left in the camera so I wanted to use them up. The sad thing is that I only have 2 packs (10 exposures each) and am embarking on a cross country trip. While I have both a decent digital camera and an iPhone, I feel like neither is truly worthy of documenting something of such magnitude. When it comes to film, I feel simultaneously sad and frustrated. Technology is propelling us forward at what seems to be an exponentially faster rate per 10 years. I love digital "things" and general progress but it feels as thought we are completely disregarding our past in our push for a streamlined, wireless and sometimes, thoughtless world.

Some bars that I chopped and flipped yesterday. The whole process took about 2 hours, due to the rusting of parts but it was worth it. I pulled them off of an old Univega (which is on good shape, I wish i could take the frame with me) that was found and given to me about 3 years ago quite possibly to this day. It's amazing what a little elbow grease and hard work can do for the mind. It's also really astounding what happens when you visit your home, how quickly you fall back into your thought patterns. It can be rough but it can also be done. Just have to keep working and cleaning-everything is temporary!

once again, i've left my blog to wither and die. but i've found it! i haven't forgotten you, the 2 people who read this thing!

so the 40 hour a week job that i started i have recently put in my notice because of my acceptance into the MFA program at the University of Oregon. I will soon be going the way of the "Raetzke", leaving the midwest and Notre Dame for the Pacific Northwesr and the Fighting Ducks.

i began working a full time job this week. i have insurance, including the ability to get my teeth cleaned and looked at. i am making a living wage. but there are some catches. i go to work at 10:15 and i get home at about 9. it's intense. and it's only been a week. the atmosphere at work is good and i love the people, but i am not doing any type of creative work. hopefully next week i can show them my skills. i am very drained. the weather is starting to break and i keep my fingers crossed that it will hold out for a while.

it would be nice to make art.

so it's official. it's february. january is such a boring month. with the exception of MLK day, nothing really happens. it's almost like it doesn't exist. all of a sudden it's may and you begin to notice stuff. i don't think i have ever thought back in my life and thought, wow, january of xx year was so awesome. i never remember anything. maybe new year's but even that is a stretch these days.

as i have said in earlier posts, i am trying to get better about regularly posting stuff. i know there are only a few people that even read this, but to those that do-thank you. it means a lot to me to know that some one will see this and therefore i want to make it worth the while. so i decided to give myself a little exercise to get my arts-a-flowin' again. i've not been taking many photos lately. some of it is that it's so damn cold and i always have gloves on and i can't use my phone with gloves, wah-wah. so here it is. a few photos from my walk to work. it was a beautiful day despite the frigid temps and the sky was clear. i've since been thinking out some ideas and will hopefully post those soon. so without any further ado...

i am hoping to both post art here but also to make art. i have been at a virtual standstill since leaving school, all the "real life" stuff gets in the way. really, that's just an excuse. i don't have a studio, don't have (somewhat) unlimited resources and time, and i don't have deadlines. my focus lately has been with the adobe creative suite and trying to get a better working knowledge. web stuff is next, followed by final cut/after effects. i am always wanting to take photographs but i just rarely see anything that i feel justifies a photo. most days i am inside and i make the same walk everyday.

so the job is a tad better. the people are nice, but way older than me. it's just a little uncomfortable. and has nothing to do with design, really. it's a step in the right direction i guess. the hours are really strange since i've been used to 8-6. eh. whatever. it's right around the corner from Karyn's Cooked, which is both good and bad.

i am officially in the waiting period on grad schools. last time around, it was pretty nerve wracking. i am hopeful this time, as i am going to be happy with any of the schools i get into.

on a totally superficial subject, the new iPhone update is amazing. and i didn't lose any ringtones!

after a long hiatus, i have decided to resurrect this blog. more specifically i set out this evening to make a new blog only to realize that this url had been taken, leading me to believe that i had already created a blog, become tired of it (or just forgot) and abandoned it. so, i am going to breathe some life back into this withered shell of a weblog and hopefully keep it going again. as of this post, it will only be words but i soon hope to be connecting some photos to my blog as well.

went to a football game yesterday which was interesting. since it was basically a glorified scrimmage it was just the right pace for me. i got a tan but only on my left arm. figures. being in the sun as long as i was really knocked the life out of me. i fell asleep at about 11. i woke up to a sinus issue and what looks to be about an eighty degree day. it's one of those days when no on eis in the building. i mean no one. i have a 15 page paper to write but i really don't care about it. the professor hasn't put much emphasis on finishing it. we'll see how much i can get done today. i also have semester end reviews in twelve days. that's frightening. not even two weeks. i've been fairly depressed about my situation right now. i know that the best thing for me to do would be to go to chicago at least for the summer, but i am totally wimping out. i can feel it. my life is so controlled by fear it's amazing i can even get up in the morning.

today i went for a brisk walk around the lake on campus. the blue and gold game is this weekend (i don't really know what that is) so there are a lot of alumni here. i wonder if it is the catholic/faith inluence that brings them back so consistantly. i can respect that they appreciate their education, but this place is just so, well, creepy. it's hard to clear one's head around this place people are always playing, running, listening to bad music. whatever.

still can't get flock to work. went to the doctor's on campus and the pharmacy and met a woman from cuyahoga falls. strange. washed the car, ran to target; all in a day's work. got an interesting phone call today from the art institute of chicago and hopefully i will be talking to them again.

i set this up mostly to see how this new browser, flock, can edit blogs(so far i haven't been able to use it). i have been meaning to "really get into" blogging, mostly because i fancy myself to be a good off-the-cuff writer and feel that i actually might have something to say. plus i get to procrastinate about doing any substantial work. i will also include photos from flickr from time to time.
